1986 was Brookside's fifth year of production.
Overview[]
Major storylines included Nicholas Black and Heather Haversham's wedding, Sheila Grant's rape and Teresa Nolan's suicide.
House by House[]
5 Brookside Close[]
Sheila's college tutor becomes steadily more obsessed with her, while her studies create tension between her and Bobby. Sheila is raped by a taxi driver and Matty is arrested, but released, only to find that his wife has committed suicide. Damon's YTS finishes, but he is devastated to learn that he will not be kept on in employment. He goes to Torquay in search of work and ends up sleeping rough. Karen loses her virginity to Guy.
6 Brookside Close[]
Harry places a personal ad, then feels disloyal to Edna. Ralph meets up with one respondent, Madge. Harry is delighted when his daughter-in-law Sally announces her pregnancy, but blames himself when the baby is born prematurely and dies after he and Sally have argued.
7 Brookside Close[]
Pat and Sandra grow further apart, and eventually she leaves in September with a new man. As a favour to McArdle, Pat and Terry accompany his mother to Barbados, but Terry is suspicious that she is actually couriering parcels.
8 Brookside Close[]
Lucy's affair ends badly when she confronts her lover and his wife, only to be dumped. She goes to France with Barry Grant. Paul is made redundant in May. Gordon returns from France with a girl, only for Paul and Annabelle to find out she is his male lover's sister. Annabelle becomes a magistrate and gives up the catering business.
9 Brookside Close[]
Heather marries Nick in June. His friend, Charlie, tells her about Nick's heroin addiction. Nick overdoses, and his ex-wife advises Heather to leave him. Nick is sacked, then steals some of Heather's jewellery. Finally she asks him to leave in November, but he is later found dead on a park bench. Heather leaves the Close for Ireland.
10 Brookside Close[]
Tracy Corkhill is having an affair with one of her teachers. Billy assaults him, and is convicted and sentenced to three months in prison. He wins an appeal, but is still sacked from his job. Billy's brother, Jimmy, appears on the scene with a load of 'hot' bricks, whilst Billy's son, Rod, announces that he wants to join the police. Billy is sacked from another job, leaving the family with severe money difficulties. Their utilities are cut off and the television is repossessed. Tracy starts a hairdressing YTS.

- 8th July - Whilst returning home on a night out with Matty Nolan, Sheila Grant is raped by an unknown attacker.
- 29th July - Matty Nolan is arrested on suspicion of raping Sheila Grant.
- 5th August - Teresa Nolan commits suicide by drowning herself after discovering her husband Matty has been charged with rape.
- 11th August - Teresa Nolan's funeral takes place.
- 9th December - After a night on the streets following a row with his wife, Nicholas Black dies of a heroin overdose.
